ORCA Prize 2011
Winner: Dr Peter Shellis
Citation:
Dr. Peter Shellis was an Honorary Visiting Fellow, School of Oral and Dental Sciences, University of Bristol, in the UK. He was educated in England and received a degree in Zoology and Comparative Physiology from Birmingham University. Dr. Shellis has presented many papers in cariology at IADR, ORCA and other scientific meetings, and he has authored approximately 100 peer reviewed publications.
He has, over a prolonged period of years, demonstrated a series of sustained, outstanding and innovative research achievements, which have made significant contributions to the basic understanding of both dental caries and erosion. His activities have generated new knowledge and insights into erosion. The range of the scientific achievements in the areas of dental caries and erosion is very broad. He has been a sought after co-author not only for his outstanding knowledge and historical awareness, but also for his excellent scientific writing skills and his gift for teaching this to others.
Furthermore, Peter Shellis was very active within ORCA. His drive to help those individuals and nations entering the field of caries research has led to him contributing to many summer schools both within ORCA and with organised spin-off symposia. He served ORCA as an Editor of Caries Research between the years 2000-2009, during which period the journal has grown in popularity and impact, frequently ranking among the top 10 dental journals. News reported to the ORCA Board at its July meeting showed that the Journal is now standing as number four amongst the dental journals in the citation index. His efforts for ORCA and its journal over this extended time were far beyond what could have reasonably been asked.
