Professor George Stookey
The research career of George Stookey, Professor Emeritus at Indiana University School of Dentistry, spans approximately 50 years. He was one of the first to conduct research on fluoride toothpastes and the efficacy of these products in caries control. He has a very long and prestigious record of research in cariology as evidenced by many peer-reviewed publications and the award of many millions of dollars of research funding from national and international government bodies as well as major commercial organisations. Professor Stookey was responsible for establishing the Oral Health Research Institute at Indiana University School of Dentistry and he attracted significant amounts of research funding to conduct many clinical, in situ and in vitro studies to establish the efficacy of fluoride dentifrices and other caries-related products. His research also contributed greatly to our understanding of the caries process and how to control it. Throughout his research career George has continually embraced new technology. Over the years this has included the use of transverse microradiography, quantitative light fluorescence and other caries detection methods. He was responsible for initiating international meetings related to early caries detection. Over the past 20 years George has had a profound influence on the lives of many young researchers. He has provided opportunities for post-doctoral research for people from countries including Japan, the UK, the Netherlands, Iceland, Venezuela and Turkey, to name but a few. In each case, he has provided inspiration, advice and research direction which has been of profound benefit for such individuals who have often progressed to high-ranking academic positions with their own research teams.
